Some detention facilities, including regional ones for defendants--some of whom are innocent--and inmates with relatively low-level crimes, utilize a system of practically complete isolation for everyone. It is unnecessary, ineffective and inhumane.
Being in the facility itself, imprisoned; separated from loved ones and friends; severely restricted in physical movement is significant punishment.
